We are delighted to announce the 49th Annual Meeting of the Viking Surgeons Association. This year we will be on the Island of Skye, a little later than usual, in November.

For those arriving on Wednesday 2nd, a golf competition is planned, followed by a meet and greet at the Hebridean Hotel, Broadford.
The main academic programme is on Thursday 3rd November, and will also be available as a Webinar if you are unable to attend in person this year. Once again we are grateful to the FRRHH at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for making this possible. We have a great line up of speakers on a huge variety of topics.
The traditional Vikings Dinner is planned for Thursday Evening at the Broadford Hotel.
The academic programme continues on Friday morning, and a small excursion is planned for the afternoon.

If you are unable to join us in person, the Academic programme on the Thursday will be available by Webinar, run by the FRRHH, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. As before, there is no fee. 

Details and links will be available soon from the RCSEd Website or with a further post on this website. You will not be able to join the AGM, however, or the programme on Friday, although there may be a zoom link available for the session on Rural Workforce Planning in Scotland.

Skin Cancer Management by the Generalist

Update to programme


We are delighted to host Mr Ben Aldridge (Consultant Plastic Surgeon/Dermatologist), Mr Kushik Lalla (SAS General Surgeon, Gilbert Bain Hospital), and Mr Kaz Rahman (Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary) for this webinar. The session will be chaired by Ms Lauren Smithson (Rural Surgical Fellow, Raigmore Hospital).

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Recognise and differentiate common presentations of skin cancer
  • Describe the key steps involved in the diagnostic work-up of a skin cancer patient
  • Describe the management principles in treating skin cancer
  • Discuss the models of care possible in delivering skin cancer care to remote and rural populations.

An outstanding full day conference this year with something for everyone. Over 100 surgeons and trainees from across the world linked in for each session.
Topics explored included: the future of R & R Surgery in Scotland; clinical sessions on orthopaedics & paediatric surgery; a trainee section; the place of Emergency Rural Practitioners in the Rural unit;  and some great examples of how surgeons have been involved in rural healthcare in different parts of the world.

Other Surgical Specialties Emergencies in the Rural Unit – Neurosurgery

Overview

The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare have partnered with the Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) to deliver a series of webinars focused on Rural Surgery.

This one-hour webinar aims to update general surgeons working in remote areas on the topics of spinal injuries and intracranial injuries. It will include recognition of injuries, resuscitation, appropriate and timely investigation, stabilisation for transfer (if appropriate & available) and options for operative management. This is for the surgeon at the District General Hospital with a significant transfer time to a neurosurgical unit, as well as surgeons in remote areas with longer transfer times or no transfer options at all.

Viking Surgeons Association: Ophthalmology for the Rural Surgeon

The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare are pleased to present their next webinar in partnership with The Vikings Surgeons Association on Tuesday 27 April at 19:00 BST.

The panel discussion will focus on conditions affecting the majority world such as ocular infections and the safe management of trauma and simple tumours. There will also be a presentation on the Arclight Ophthalmoscope and its purpose in preventing blindness.
